What is your activity?
Our brewing activity takes place within the framework of the Trappist abbey, as the monks participate in the production. Westvleteren beer is produced in limited quantities because the production program is based on the monastic calendar.
In 2005, a user-driven ranking website for craft beer enthusiasts named it as the best beer in the world. It has since been awarded the title four more times and was named as one of the top beers in the world for taste, putting it on the map for international beer lovers.
The Westvleteren beers carry the label of “Authentic Trappist Product”, which means the beer is brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the control and responsibility of the community of monks, whose revenue is devoted to social service.
The abbey produces three types of beer: lager, 8 and 12.
What were your needs in e-payment?
For our payment system, we were looking for an international partner with a strong fraud detection module, with the sales process open only twice a month for about two and a half hours and with a limit on the number of beers visitors could buy.
The click and collect system provides a fluid experience, with intuitive and mobile-first payment pages, a stable platform with no downtime, and a sophisticated fraud detection module which sets sales limits and blocks transactions as necessary. This has thwarted a number of fraud attempts against the monastery and greatly reduced black market reselling of the beer.
We never ship: we sell the beer online, but people have to come and pick it up.
How did your firsts online payments go?
I must say that at first, we wondered if the website would support the number of visitors. But we didn’t have any problems with the first payments, which went off without a hitch.
What dreams do you have for the future?
We have noticed that thanks to the international visibility of the website, people who book a holiday in Belgium plan to buy beer. Thus, during their stay, they come to collect their crate of beer.
We hope that the interest in our beer will continue to grow and that we will continue to improve customer service through the Internet.
